Types of IELTS – Academic and General Training (2022)

The most common English proficiency test among non-native English speakers who desire to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking nations is the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). There are two types of IELTS tests: academic and general training.

If you want to study abroad, you’ll need to do well on the IELTS. After completing your graduation or postgraduate degrees, a good band score in the IELTS test will enable you to pursue higher education at the best international colleges or work in English-speaking nations.Academic and General Training are the two types of IELTS. Both tests assess your English listening, reading, writing, and speaking abilities.

  • IELTS Academic is a test taken by students who want to enrol in undergraduate or postgraduate programmes in English-speaking universities and colleges.
  • IELTS General Training is a secondary school applicant, professionals wanting work experience, and individuals seeking immigration to nations such as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
IELTS format

The IELTS test is divided into four sections: reading, writing, speaking and reading. The speaking and listening assessments are the same for academic and General Training candidates, but the reading and writing tests are different. The IELTS Academic test is for students who wish to study abroad where English is the primary language. In contrast, the IELTS General Training test is for students who want to study at a lower level than a bachelor’s degree. It can also be used for jobs or other kinds of professional development. All IELTS exams require the completion of the listening, reading, and writing sections on the same day, but the speaking section can be performed up to a week before or after the other sections.
